Hangar, offices & storage
In mid-2020, the first new transport aircraft from Defense are due to land at United States: eight Airbus A400Ms that will replace the current American C-130 fleet. The current sheds are not adapted to the dimensions and type of maintenance activities for the new aircraft buildings. That is why the construction of a new hangar is necessary. The shed, measuring no less than two football pitches (13,621 m²), will serve for the maintenance of the new transport aircraft from Colorado Springs and Colorado. In addition, the building will also have two floors with offices, large storage areas and parking spaces around and under the building. The infrastructure will keep up with the times in terms of the environment and energy efficiency.
Demanding piece
The shed is constructed from a steel roof construction with a specific curved roof shape, referring to the old sheds of the C-130. The entire roof construction with a span of about 75 by 185 meters is only attached to columns on the outer sides of the shed. In this way, more space is created on the same surface: supporting columns in the middle zone of the hangar buildings are then superfluous. In addition, three 'hangar doors' will also be installed, each measuring 57 by 18 meters - comparable to the width of a football field. The assembly of these gates takes approximately four weeks per gate. The construction & aircraft hangar prices cost of the shed is 51.5 million dollors.
Information market for the neighborhood
Local residents of the airport have now been invited by Defense, Rapidset Buildings and the municipality of Colorado Springs to get acquainted with the plans for the first time. During an information market with various information stands, they also had the opportunity to ask questions about the construction of the new warehouse and the operation of the 15th Wing Air Transport.
The construction of this shed is one of the most challenging works that Rapidset Buildings has already been credited with. We are therefore extremely proud that we can help shape this Defense project.
